  • Vegan Sour Cream: This is the true star of our dip. There are several vegan options available. I recommend trying a few until you find your favorite. I prefer mine with a bit of tang!
  • Buffalo Sauce: Spice up your dip with dairy-free and vegan buffalo sauce. I’ve tried a few different brands and love Frank’s red hot sauce the most but mostly I prefer making vegan buffalo sauce at home!
  • Hearts of Palm: That’s our vegan chicken, guys! This plant-based ingredient is fleshy and juicy enough to become a great meat sub. Grab a can from a grocery store, and make sure you drain and chop before using. Jackfruit, soy curls, and artichoke hearts are great substitutes.
  • Vegan Cheddar Cheese: Of course, you’ll need a big handful of vegan cheddar cheese! This will add a beautiful golden crust on top of your dip. You can use any dairy-free and vegan cheese brand available in your area. Choose one you have used before that has good meltability.
  • Green Onion: Chop them small so that they mix well into the dip and be sure to save a few for the perfect garnish.

🔀 Variations

  • Make a cheesier dip. Add nutritional yeast for a cheesier bite. It’s also a great way to add extra vitamin B12 to your vegan diet. Win-win!
  • Enhance the creamy consistency. Pop in some silken tofu for a creamier dip. I suggest blending it well with your vegan sour cream before mixing. It’ll also make your dip healthier by increasing the protein content. Vegan cream cheese will do wonders, too! These additions also make a thicker dip.
  • Boost the flavor. I love garlic! It’s a dynamite flavor enhancer. Adding just a pinch of garlic powder or minced fresh garlic to this dip will elevate its taste. For a zesty kick, sprinkle a little onion powder on top! I also sometimes use fresh lemon juice for a fresh and tangy twist.
  • Spicier. Add some crushed red pepper flakes or more hot sauce to your liking. You can also use jalapeño peppers for an extra spicy flavor.
  • Chunkier Dip: Double the amount of hearts of palm in the dip.

🔪 How to Make Vegan Buffalo Chicken Dip

This vegan dip recipe is as simple as it gets and mixes up in minutes. Here’s everything you need to do for a bowl full of cheesy delight:

  1. Chop the Hearts of Palm. I prefer them mostly chopped small but still a little chunky.
  2. Mix It Up. Take a medium bowl and toss the hearts of palm, and green onion with the vegan sour cream and buffalo sauce. Mix in a handful of vegan cheese.

  1. Bake It Up. Transfer everything to a baking dish and top it with cheddar cheese. Pop the dish in your oven and bake it for 10-15 minutes (or until bubbly) at 350° F.
  2. Serve Your Zesty Dip. Garnish your dip with green onions and serve hot with crackers and tortilla chips.

How to Store Leftover Dip

  • Storing: I doubt you’ll ever have any leftover vegan buffalo dip. But if you do, let it come to room temperature and pour it into an airtight container. You can store it in the fridge for up to four days.
  • Freezing: I don’t recommend freezing your leftover vegan buffalo dip because of the vegan cheese. It’ll become crumbly when frozen and thawed.
  • Make Ahead: If you’re planning on serving the dip to a crowd on a get-together, save yourself some time and mix everything beforehand. Just bake it before serving to get that fresh, hot-out-of-the-oven taste.
  • Reheat: Pop it in the microwave or return it to the oven to heat at 350° F for 10-15 minutes. If it’s thick you can add some more vegan sour cream or dairy-free milk to loosen it up. Add more cheese on top if you want!

Serving Suggestions

My family and I are big fans of this vegan buffalo chicken dip! Once, I paired it with vegan ranch, and boy, was it a hit. This easy appetizer is great for movie-night treats, game-day snacks, or even a quick lunch fix.

Here are my most loved suggestions to serve with your vegan buffalo dip:

  • Pita Chips: Scoop up the creamy, spicy goodness with pita chips. They’re a match made in heaven! I’m sure you’ll love these Crispy Air Fryer Wonton Chips with it, too.
  • Tortilla Chips: These corn chips are always available at my place. I think our dip loves them as much as we do. For a healthier option, try my Baked Plantain Chips.
  • Fresh Veggies: Broccoli, carrots, bell peppers, cucumbers, and cherry tomatoes – go crazy with your favorite veggies.
  • Side Dish: Enjoy it with a hearty main course, pair it with my Sweet Potato Casserole. It’ll also make a yummy sauce for Buffalo Cauliflower Tacos. Try it and let me know!
  • Repurpose Leftovers: Use it as a filling for quesadillas or a vegan grilled cheese.

💭 Expert Tips

  • Don’t Over Cook. Always keep an eye on your dip when it’s baking. If the top is browning too soon, tent it with aluminum foil.
  • Adjust the Buffalo Sauce: You can make it to your tastes by adding more or less of the buffalo sauce.
  • Creating Texture. The hearts of palm are the key to giving your dip a meaty texture. I recommend chopping them but not too much to maintain some texture.

FAQs

What is vegan buffalo sauce made of?

Most of the ingredients in buffalo sauce are vegan except for the butter that’s used to give it a creamy consistency. Some store brands are vegan such as Frank’s where they use other ingredients to mimic the texture.

Can I double or even triple this recipe?

Yes, certainly! Calculate the ingredients using the .5X, 2X, or 3X button in the recipe to make the desired amount. For baking, use a larger baking dish such as a 9 x 9 or larger if you make a triple batch.

What’s the best way to make a creamy vegan dip?

Vegan cream cheese, sour cream, and silken tofu are often used to imitate the creamy consistency you get from cheese in dips.

I tested this recipe with a homemade vegan cashew cream cheese and vegan tofu cream cheese. I preferred the flavor of the sour cream but found it does cook up a bit thicker. The tofu cream cheese worked better for consistency but I wasn’t overly enthusiastic about the flavor. I did not use store bought cream cheese as it wasn’t available for me but I believe a vegan cream cheese brand such as VioLife would work quite well.
