New Hampshire attorney general says fatal killing of Manchester man by police was legally justified

The New Hampshire attorney general's office says four Manchester police officers involved in the fatal shooting of a 26-year-old man last year were justified in their use of deadly force. Alex Naone died May 26, 2023, after being shot seven times in the arms, chest, abdomen and back. Investigators say he had argued with fiancée and was intoxicated when he held a gun to his head in front of their four-year-old daughter. Outside the apartment, investigators say Naone initially complied with officers’ orders to put down the gun, but later picked it back up, racked it and raised it toward his head. Four officers fired their weapons. The attorney general's office says their actions were legally justified.

Oklahoma Supreme Court dismisses lawsuit of last Tulsa Race Massacre survivors seeking reparations

The Oklahoma Supreme Court has dismissed a lawsuit of the last two survivors of the 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre who were seeking reparations. The nine-member court on Wednesday upheld the decision made by a district court judge in Tulsa last year. The suit was an attempt to force the city of Tulsa and others to make recompense for the destruction by a white mob of the once-thriving Black district known as Greenwood. The two survivors of the attack, who are both now over 100 years old, sued in 2020 with the hope of seeing what their attorney called “justice in their lifetime.” A third plaintiff, Hughes Van Ellis, died last year at age 102.

Mississippi woman who oversaw drug trafficking is sentenced to prison, prosecutor says

Federal prosecutors say a 49-year-old Mississippi woman who oversaw a drug trafficking organization has been sentenced to 23 years in prison. Linda Hunt of Crowder was sentenced Tuesday in Oxford by U.S. District Court Judge Sharion Ayco*ck. The sentencing came six months after Hunt pleaded guilty to distribution of methamphetamine. She also was ordered to forfeit $20,000. The U.S. attorney for northern Mississippi, Clay Joyner, say Hunt oversaw the drug trafficking organization and that 20 other people have pleaded guilty and been sentenced since 2022 to methamphetamine-related charges, money laundering or both.

A 98-year-old man's liver was donated. He is believed to be the oldest American organ donor ever

Transplant organizations say a 98-year-old man may be the oldest American to ever donate an organ. Orville Allen lived a lifetime of service as a World War II and Korean war veteran and a longtime educator in rural Missouri. He had been in robust health until he suffered a fall at his home, and ultimately died on May 29. Hospital staff asked the family if they would consider donating his liver. Given Allen’s age, it was a surprising question. But relatives knew it would be what he wanted them to do. His liver was successfully transplanted into a 72-year-old woman.

Top investigator in Karen Read murder case questioned over inappropriate texts

Defense attorneys have grilled the lead investigator in the case of a woman accused of leaving her Boston police officer boyfriend for dead in a snowbank about offensive and inappropriate texts he wrote about her. Massachusetts State Trooper Michael Proctor also acknowledged Wednesday that he was friends with several witnesses. The defense also criticised Proctor for texts in which he appeared to single out Karen Read as responsible for John O’Keefe’s death less than 24 hours after his body was found in January 2022. Prosecutors say Read struck him with her SUV and drove away. The defense argues that she's being framed.
