FAQ's

I don't like using fresh garlic—will garlic powder work?

Sure thing, that's a great swap! If you're not so much a fan of peeling and mincing garlic, or you're just trying to save some time, a teaspoon of garlic powder will do the trick.

Do I need to cook the garlic bread before freezing it?

Nope, no cooking is necessary! Simply assemble, wrap, and freeze the delicious garlic bread until you're ready to enjoy it. Then, at that point, you'll bake or heat it up according to the instructions below.

Do I keep the bread wrapped in foil while baking?

Yep, and that's why this is an extra easy snack! Simply pull the frozen, foil-wrapped baguette out of the freezer and pop it straight into the oven. You don't even have to thaw it if you don't want to.

How do I make the garlic bread slices more crispy?

Good question. By keeping the halves together while baking, you'll end up with softer garlic bread. If you don't like a soft center, unwrap and separate the halves after baking and lay them in a single layer, butter side up. Broil until they're toasted to your personal preference.

Can I make garlic bread in the toaster?

Generally, no—sorry! A toaster oven works fine, since you can place the garlic butter spread facing up. However, the garlicky, cheesy topping can fall off in a normal toaster and start to burn!

Test kitchen tips

  • Choose your bread carefully. Though you can use any bread, pick a thicker baguette. The thin ones get crispier more quickly.
  • Softened butter is easiest to mix and spread. If you forget to pull it out in advance, you can use the 50% power setting on your microwave.
  • Minced garlic works, too. If you don't want to fuss with peeling and mincing your own garlic, feel free to use the easy stuff!
  • Swap the seasoning. Run out of Italian seasoning? No worries! Use any dried herbs you have, like rosemary, thyme, oregano, and parsley.
  • Cut safely! A serrated knife works best for slicing fresh bread.
  • Don't skimp on the spread. This homemade garlic bread recipe is best when you make sure to spread the garlic butter from edge to edge!
  • Make your own garlic bread. After adding the garlic butter, sprinkle on more of your favorite cheese for extra cheesy bread. In addition to the parmesan cheese, we love cheddar, gouda, or mozzarella cheese.
  • Like extra crispy edges? Open up the foil while the bread bakes.
  • Lay the foil-wrapped bread on a baking sheet while baking it. That way, if any butter happens to leak out, it won't drip on the oven floor!
  • Portion out individual garlic toasts. Cut the baguette into thick slices and spread the garlic butter on each (like shown in the photo above.) Then, from frozen, you can pull out one or two slices of garlic bread anytime you want, rather than the whole baguette.
  • Ditch the oven—make air fryer garlic bread! Preheat to 350 degrees F. Place the slices in the air fryer basket and cook for 5-7 minutes.
  • Grilled garlic bread is just as good. Cooking on the grill and don't want to turn on the oven? Place the foil-wrapped bread onto your grill and cook for 10-12 minutes. You can also place the unwrapped slices of bread butter-side-down on the grill and cook for about three minutes.

Storage

Refrigerate—This is the best frozen garlic bread for a reason! In fact, refrigerating bread tends to dry it out, so keep it in the freezer 'til you're ready to bake it. You can keep leftover garlic bread at room temperature in an airtight container for a day or two.

Freezer—Whether unbaked or leftover, you can keep homemade bread in the freezer for about three months. Just be sure to wrap it tightly before storage. It's always a good idea to use foil and a layer of plastic wrap to preserve its delicious buttery, garlicky flavors!

Reheat—Reheating easy garlic bread is just as simple as making it. To warm your leftover bread, use the air fryer, oven, or grill as mentioned in the recipe card or "Deb's Tips" section. However, you'll want to keep the bread wrapped in foil and cook it just until it's warmed.
