I have been a fan ofFrisch’sever since I moved to Cincinnati! If you’re not familiar – it’s a local franchise under the Big Boy umbrella. Their signature sandwich is the Big Boy of course! It’s a similar to a Big Mac but the special sauce is tartar sauce instead! But in Cincinnati – we like to mix things up a bit – so we’ve been known to take the Big Boy sandwich and make it into a Big Boy Pizza!

Frisch’s actually sells their tartar sauce in stores and the restaurants – they have a regular and a SPICY version. The spicy tartar sauce is like hot sauce + tartar sauce! OMG – it’s so good. But either of them is actually DELICIOUS on a pizza. I loved it so much I made it twice already this week!

Big Boy Pizza Ingredients
The Spicy Big Boy Pizza has all the elements of the Big Boy Sandwich! Most importantly – TARTAR SAUCE is your pizza sauce – then add your toppings – just like a Big Boy. You might be saying to yourself – “Tartar Sauce on a pizza???” – let me tell you – IT IS DELICIOUS!!!! I was SHOCKED at how much I loved it!!! Here’s what you’ll need:
- Pizza Crust
- ground beef
- Taco Johns Potato Ole Seasoning Mix – you can also use taco seasoning or seasoning salt
- Frisch’s Tartar Sauce – regular or spicy
- dill pickle slices
- Land o’Lake American Cheese, shredded – purchase in a 1/2 pound chunk from deli
- Most pizzas have Mozzarella cheese but this one really needs American cheese to stay true to the Big Boy burger
- shredded lettuce (iceberg or romaine lettuce)
How do you make Big Boy Pizza?
Big Boy Pizza is fairly straight forward – everything that goes on a big boy – goes on a pizza crust instead of a hamburger bun. You’ll thank me later!
- Preheat oven to 400 (or whatever the recipe or package directions call for)
- Lay out pizza dough on pan
- Heat skillet on medium high and brown ground beef
- Add Taco Johns seasoning mix and stir
- Top whole crust with tartar sauce
- Add seasoned beef, pickles and cheese
- Bake according to pizza crust directions– typically 10-15 minutes
- Remove pizza from oven and top with lettuce
- Serve with a side of Frisch’s tartar sauces
How do you make Big Boy sauce?
Big Boy sauce is tartar sauce – if you don’t have the real thing – you can use another brand or make your own. Tartar sauce has mayonnaise, dill pickle relish, lemon juice, onion powder, paprika and garlic powder. Frisch’s tartar sauce is available on Amazon.
What Pizza Dough or Crust should I use?
I’ve used every kind of pizza crust – from the pre-made, pre-cooked crusts to the canned crust you just roll out and even dabbled in making my own pizza crust (see above). Really – use what you like – I will say – my favorite for the time and effort is probably pre-made dough that comes in a bag you can purchase at the grocery store.
How do you store and reheat leftovers?
The pizza makes enough for four people (2 slices each). That said – if you’re single like me – you might have leftovers! Remove lettuce and store in airtight plastic zipper bags and refrigerate up to a week – or freeze up to three months. Reheat in the air fryer at 300F for 5 minutes.
