What is the problem with the Ford Fiesta 1.0 EcoBoost ST-Line? ›

One of the most reported issues with the 1.0 EcoBoost is its propensity to misfire. Heralded by a judder that shudders beneath your feet, it's a sign that not all is ticking in sync within your engine. Common culprits include failing ignition coils or defective spark plugs, amongst others.

A good driving position is easy to achieve, all controls are well-weighted, and even the steering wheel feels good. The three-cylinder 1.0-litre EcoBoost turbo petrol engine is light and it gives good performance and economy. As well as this 125PS version, there's also a 100PS option, which is equally impressive.

They should easily clock 80,000-100,000 miles with little need for repair, so long as the vehicle is regularly and properly serviced. In fact, take a quick look through the second hand classifieds and you'll find many examples of EcoBoost-powered Fords that have racked up in excess of 150,000 miles.

That is why Ford has issued a safety recall for certain 2016–2022MY Ford EcoSport^® and Focus^® vehicles with the 1.0L engine. The oil-drive belt tensioner arm may fracture or separate, causing a loss of vehicle power and power braking assist, increasing the risk of a crash.

1 Litre EcoBoost Engine Problems

Loss of engine power and serious valve damage is commonplace on higher mileage EcoBoost engines. The EcoBoost engine features only direct fuel injection with no fuel to naturally clean leading to a build up of carbon on the intake valve stems, which restricts airflow.

As mentioned before, we recommend the wet timing belt to be replaced at no more than 8 years or 80,000 miles and at a recommended 5 years or 50,000 miles, to ensure your engine runs smooth and to prevent any further more devastating issues that may arise from a worn or damaged wet timing belt.

Avoid the 1.0-liter EcoBoost

There is definitely an EcoBoost powerplant you should steer clear of unless you have a lot of powertrain warranty left. That would be the 1.0-liter, three-cylinder engine that was found in the Ford Fiesta and Ford EcoSport.

We really like the Ford Focus's entry-level 123bhp 1.0 Ecoboost 125 – in fact, it's our pick of the engine range. It's not all that frisky (0-62mph takes 10.2sec), but has decent shove once the revs build past 2000rpm. Even so, the VW Golf 1.5 TSI 130 is punchier still.

What Are the Allegations? The plaintiffs are owners and lessees of 2016 or later Ford-brand vehicles equipped with a 1.0L EcoBoost engine which are equipped with defective engine which fails to properly circulate the engine oil which is necessary to lubricate the internal moving components of the engine.

The Ford 1.0 litre EcoBoost engines use a Wet Belt instead of the traditional Timing belt, the main difference is that the Wet Belt runs inside the engine and a timing belt runs on the outside of the engine.

You can get different outputs from the 1.0L EcoBoost engine, so keep an eye out for the versions with 100bhp, 125bhp and 140bhp.

It has proved reliable, practical, economical, and cracking to drive. The model I tested during our road test review was the sporty ST-Line, which comes with a sharper body kit and a range of additional features. The Ford Fiesta received a facelift in 2022, bringing with it a range of updates.

Ford Fiesta common problems include: Worn suspension. Fluid leaks. Corroded or blocked components.

Ford Fiesta ST reliability shouldn't be much of a concern. The Fiesta has been on sale since 2008 and there haven't been any major issues. The engine and gearbox in the ST are tried and tested in other products.
